Valley of the Winds is a demanding walk through Kata Tjuta. The Parks Australia walk guide (opens in a new tab) lists the full circuit as 7.4 kilometres, Grade 4 and about four hours, with shorter return options to Karu and Karingana lookouts.
Choose the route that suits your day
The full circuit is steep, rocky and difficult in places. Karu Lookout is a 2.2-kilometre return option, while the Karingana Lookout return is longer and includes steps and steep sections. Wear sturdy footwear, carry water and allow plenty of time.
Respect Country and changing conditions
The walk closes at Karu Lookout from 11 am when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36 C or more. The area is culturally sensitive: do not photograph or film the rock formations, though close-up images of people, flora and fauna are welcome.
